Itineraries and access information

Decide on the pace.
Let Venice breathe.

Two cultural tracks, to be adapted to the availability of entrances. Times are indicative: they are not opening hours or programs of accompanied visits.

Orientation · 30–45 minutes

Start from the square.

Observe the facade of the basilica, the bell tower and the relationship with the Palazzo Ducale. Avoid concentrating all the day's income here.

Visit · 60–90 minutes

Enter San Marco.

Pay attention to mosaics and architecture. Consider an additional margin if you choose visitable spaces with separate access.

Walk · 30–45 minutes

Reach the Basin.

Continue towards the Molo and Riva degli Schiavoni. An outdoor conclusion, with a break and without another obligatory entrance.

Recommended arrival: first locate the connection to the San Marco area from your starting point. From Piazzale Roma and the station, compare the pedestrian itinerary and the ACTV service; not all trips make the same stops.

Tickets, passes and timetables

One login is not valid for everything.

Compare the conditions on the manager's website before booking. No pass indicated here guarantees the absence of waiting.

Orientation framework: inclusions and times must be confirmed on official channels.

Local councils

The path is also this
what happens between two museums.

Season and tide

In summer, plan for water and breaks; in the colder months consider humidity and wind in the Basin. For high water and warnings, consult the Municipality, not a generic forecast.

Transportation and accessibility

Check lines, stops and accessibility conditions with ACTV. A short route on the map may include bridges and steps.

Respect and attention

Do not stand on bridges blocking passage. Keep personal effects with you in crowded places and follow the rules of places of worship and museums.

Who we are

An open notebook
on the Venice of museums.

visit s.mark was born as an information project dedicated to the Basilica of San Marco and the Venetian museum heritage. Our task is to help you connect the desire to know with the concrete aspects of the visit.

Tell before advising.

A collection is not just a stop on the map. The history of the basilica, Venice's relations with the Mediterranean and the works preserved in the museums allow us to read the city through different eras and languages.

This is why we combine cultural orientations with practical suggestions: what to learn more about, which visits to keep separate, when to leave an interval and what information to confirm before departure.

How we process information.

  • We indicate the relevant institutions for access, reservations and visiting rules.
  • We present durations as editorial estimates, not guaranteed performance.
  • We do not attribute undocumented affiliations, certifications or authorizations to the portal.
  • We do not publish reviews, ratings or professional profiles without verifiable elements.

Reports and corrections.

A room can close, an entrance change, a collection be rearranged. If you notice information that needs correcting, write to us indicating the page and, if possible, the reference of the competent institution.

Visit notes · Outdoor route

When museums close,
the city remains.

From Piazza San Marco to Riva degli Schiavoni: an evening walk to observe the landscape of the Basin, without confusing the illuminated city with the night opening of the monuments.

Venetian palaces and water of the Grand Canal in the evening light

Venice at dusk. The photograph tells the atmosphere of the city and does not represent the entire itinerary.

The route in brief.

Allow about an hour for the first stretch, excluding stops. Start from the square, reach the Pier and continue on Riva degli Schiavoni. You can stop in the San Zaccaria area or extend the walk towards the Arsenale, depending on the time and energy available.

Look at the front on the water.

From the Pier the perspective changes: the square becomes an access to the Basin. Observe the profile of San Giorgio Maggiore and the relationship between the monumental buildings and the landing places. Stay on public routes and leave passage free.

A detour towards San Zaccaria.

Moving away from the shore allows you to move from the open landscape to the scale of the fields and calli. The church should be considered an external stop if you have not checked the actual opening hours.

Also prepare for the return.

Before starting, check the connection to your accommodation. Evening and night trips can follow different frequencies and itineraries. In case of high tide or bad weather, change your route and follow local directions.
